The Andes
Land of winds > The land

The Andes unfurls a wide spectrum of distinctive geographical features, making it a region rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage. Rivers, ravines, deserts, high plains, perennial snows, glaciers, forests, warm valleys, lakes, pools, springs, streams, torrents and prairies are mixed with farming lands, villages, hamlets and towns. This particular geography has held centuries of history, from the first pre-Incan cultures to the present day local, regional and national societies. Examining Andean music and not paying attention to human and natural systems divests it of much of its context. Through the lyrics of different songs, this section will show details of the astonishing complexity of this physical framework, linking it Andean people’s experiences and artistic expressions.
