Chilean guitarrones

Chilean guitarrones

The Chilean guitarrón playing, which was a widespread tradition in the Central Valley of Chile, has seen its influence wane in recent times and today it can only be traced in some parts of the Urban Region of Santiago. This area is also home to the last luthiers of this popular chordophone.

The album "Guitarrón chileno", by Picasa user José Luis Ayala, includes some pictures of guitarrones made by Manuel Basoalto, one of the main luthiers in the communities of Pirque and Puente Alto, the last stronghold of this fantastic instrument.
