La Chaya Festival

La Chaya Festival

The white of the flour and the green of the small bunches of basil mix with a rainbow of paints to stain the faces and clothes of all participants in the Chaya of La Rioja, one of the most famous "carnivals" in north-western Argentina. Rousing cajas (drums) and traditional coplas (songs) set the musical tone while people sing, dance, eat and drink until they drop.

The album by Flickr user Jorge Pereyra, shows fragments of this colourful rejoicing.
