Banda de Flautas Chicha y Guarapo

Banda de Flautas Chicha y Guarapo

This band was created in December 1982 in Bogotá (Colombia) by Omar Romero Garay, and was launched by Carlos Miñana Blasco to promote the music of the chirimías or bands of flutes and drums existing across the Colombian Andes. Besides their artistic activities they are involved in collecting, disseminating and sharing musical knowledge and repertoire, and their musical and pedagogical path includes festivals and stages all over the country.

The band's current line-up consists of Omar Romero, Alexander Ascanio, Alejandro Durán, Ángela Tobón, Carlos Pineda, Camilo Cubillos, Humberto Ascanio, Sebastián Charry, Rocío Méndez and Liliana Martín.

The band has a lot of videos showing its work, but has not released any album yet. However, in the DVD that accompanies the book Escuela de Flautas y Tambores (2011) features several tracks performed by several members of the band (Alexander Ascanio, Carlos Pineda, Omar Romero and Raúl "Numerao" González).
